Leveraging Technology to Expand Printer Applications

Dot Matrix Printers Technology

Dot matrix printer head mechanisms in action:

Laser and LED Printers Technology

Laser Printers, Electrophotographic Process - basic steps. 1: Charging of the photo-conductor with static electricity. 2: Exposition: formation of the latent image through light. 3: Developing of the latent image with toner and making it visible. 4: Transfer of developed image to the paper. 5: Fusing the toner and fixing it to the paper thus makes the printed image permanent. 6: Cleaning the photoconductor of all-excess toner and electrostatic charges.

In laser printers, the laser beam modulated by electrical signals pass through a collimator lens onto a rotating scanner, which reflects the beam and directs it through a scanning lens system, to scan on the photoconductor.

Laser printer scanning process: the latent image creation
The laser printer beam scans a horizontal line onto photo-conductor similarly to electron beam scanning used in CRT and forms a latent image by modulation of the beam.

The LED printer scanning process

LED printer scanning process: LED printers use an array of small light emitting devices to form the latent image. The image formation process is similar to that in line impact printers.

Inkjet and Bubble-jet Printers Technology

Inkjet printer drop-on-demand technology with piezoelectric actuator
The inkjet printer driver sends electrical signals to piezoelectric actuator, which then creates a pressure waves and so ejects ink drops to print dots on the media.

Bubble jet printer drop-on-demand technology
The bubble jet printer driver sends electrical signals to small resistors (micro-heaters), which evaporate small ink drops. The so formed bubbles eject ink droplets from the printhead nozzles to print dots on the paper.

Line inkjet printer printing process
Line inkjet printer printing process: The print head uses an array of nozzles, covering entire width of the printed media, to print the image. The image formation process is similar to that in LED printers.
